Elyn Jacobs Consulting, Incorporated Receives 2013 Best of Manhattan Award

Thank you Manhattan Award Program for selecting me for the 2013 Best of Manhattan Award.

Manhattan Award Program honors cancer coach Elyn Jacobs

MANHATTAN August 14, 2013 -- Elyn Jacobs Consulting, Incorporated has been selected for the 2013 Best of Manhattan Award in the Health Insurance category by the Manhattan Award Program.

Each year, the Manhattan Award Program identifies companies that we believe have achieved exceptional marketing success in their local community and business category. These are local companies that enhance the positive image of small business through service to their customers and our community. These exceptional companies help make the Manhattan area a great place to live, work and play.

“Elyn Jacobs Consulting is honored to be recognized as the best in service to those with cancer or looking to prevent cancer or its recurrence.   Helping each and every client find the path to wellness that best suits their needs is my top priority.  This would not be possible without the incredible doctors and medical experts who dedicate their lives to treating and healing the whole person, not just the disease of that person,” said Elyn Jacobs.

Elyn works tirelessly to empower people with the information they need to make the best possible choices for their cancer via education and one-on-one coaching within the tri-state area as well as globally via Skype. She also hosts a weekly radio show, Survive and Live Well to further support those looking for support and options.

“Many people do not realize that they have options when it comes to treatment.  My mission is to help clients find the best possible team and treatment for their particular cancer and needs.  I also know that it is not enough to treat cancer, we want to beat cancer.  This involves finding the root cause and addressing that cause and not merely the symptom of cancer that presents. If we do not find the cause of our cancer, we cannot cure our cancer, “said Elyn.  For  more information, please visit Elyn at Elyn Jacobs Consulting Inc.

Various sources of information were gathered and analyzed to choose the winners in each category. The 2013 Manhattan Award Program focuses on quality, not quantity. Winners are determined based on the information gathered both internally by the Manhattan Award Program and data provided by third parties.

Omega 3’s—Part of the Solution or Part of the Problem?

It seems in the past few years it is all the rage to load up on Omega 3’s, especially in the form of fish and krill oils.  I know I’ve done it. Our doctors recommend it; we read about it in health magazines and on the news.  Could we be misinformed?  Is it possible that finance is masquerading as science?  Professor Brian Peskin was guest on my radio show, Survive and Live Well.  He used that phase during the show, and I thought wow, he has a good point. I often wonder how many “miracle” solutions are based not on science, but yet are embraced by the community and before long, are accepted without question until well, someone comes along with the science to unveil the truth.  Well Peskin has done just that.

Conquering Cancer with Parent Essential Oils is an article I wrote after the show that sums up the discussion, but you can replay our conversation here as it wasn't possible to include the detail and passion.

"Fish oil (and krill oil) does not work in clinical practice (despite most everyone saying they do).  Sometimes, ingrained beliefs, even those without scientific foundation, are hard to change. As has occurred with many other nutritional supplements once in the limelight, there is little, if any, scientific validity to fish oil and krill oil’s miraculous claims. It is simply another case of “finance masquerading as science”— in this case, developing new markets for fish — and of medicine’s long history of mistakes and wrong recommendations. Making money is fine when you truly help people, but not when you harm them, even unknowingly. Results consisting of mere “associations,” and “studies“ conducted without valid experiments in which only one variable is changed at a time are meaningless. That’s why the recommendations from most “studies” are later reversed and withdrawn, which leaves the lay public confused." Professor Brian Peskin http://brianpeskin.com/BP.com/about/PeskinPrimer.pdf

That said, we all know that sometimes we don’t have the trials and science to prove that something is good for us.  Broccoli is a prime example and the list is exhaustive.  Until someone can profit off the sales, there is not money for research and trials.  Of course, even with foods such as broccoli, finance does jump in as we can now buy broccoli supplements.  And then of course, we often have Big Pharma wanting a piece of it and as they try to patent food or take over the supplement companies. Sometimes we have to use common sense; if something is good for you and could be anticancer and isn’t harmful in anyway, I say go for it.  But alas, I digress.

Omegas are important--and no one is disputing that.  However, since the days of The Omega 3 Connection, a great book, we have known that while omegas are indeed important, we still need balance; balance is the key to life and longevity.

So eat your organic cheese, cream and eggs.  Enjoy some grass-fed meat.  Eat some healthy omega 3’s such as hemp seed.  Enjoy your walnuts and avocados.  Change your oil.  Remember to avoid margarine, hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated fats, processed and fried foods and again, the GMO oils—soy, canola and corn.  Rethink your use of fish oils.  But most of all, eat with enjoyment and eat what feels right to you.  There is nothing more detrimental to your health than being asked to do something that doesn’t feel right to you—nothing good can come of that.
In this country it is illegal to cure cancer.  Doctors must follow the standard of care and hope to manage cancer as long as they can before the treatment kills the patient.  Sure, many people do survive their cancer, but many of those will suffer from the treatment.  We owe it to ourselves to be open-minded to therapies aimed at curing cancer—and we must use our instinct and our gut. Peskin's book, The Hidden Story of Cancer, amazed physicians worldwide when they implemented his protocol.
Cancer is complex and is not just the result of just one error.  Do we need to “change the oil”?  Likely we do; but we also need to create an overall anti-cancer environment within and outside the body.  Everything we eat, drink, use and breathe contributes either to our wellness or sickness.  Remember too, that many protocols are restrictive and cannot be combined.  It is usually best to work with a doctor to be sure that the protocol you have chosen is right for you.  While information is the key to knowledge and making informed choices, sometimes it can be conflicting and put us in overload.  If you need help finding the best diet or treatment for you, a qualified cancer coach can provide information, options and guidance.

The information shared here is for educational purposes only and it is not intended to replace the physician–patient relationship. If you are sick, you are advised to consult your physician.

Have a healthy day!

Professor Brian Peskin, BSEE, MIT, is the world’s leading scientist specializing in physiologic parent EFAs— termed PEOs—and their direct relationship to the prevention and treatment of both cancer and cardiovascular disease.  Peskin’s discoveries, grounded strictly in state-of-the-art science—in particular, physiology— can be found in his seminal work The Hidden Story of Cancer, and soon to be released PEO Solution with Dr. Robert Rowen, MD, peer-reviewed and complementary/integrative medical journal articles, and his clinical (in vivo) oncology PEO pre-treatment experiment in mice. The seminal I.O.W.A. Study (Investing Oils With respect to Arterial health) conclusively showed PEOs are markedly superior to fish oil supplementation.

Juice for Life—Drink and Eat Your Vegetables

Juicing is all the rage, and for good reason.  Juicing is a great way to get those much needed 8-10 daily servings of fruits and vegetables that we all too often find hard to consume.   When I was diagnosed 6 years ago, my oncologist recommended juicing, said it is very healing.  Some therapies, such as the Gerson therapy, use juicing as a major component for healing.  For most, however, juicing is just an easy way to meet those daily requirements.

Tried it; don’t like it?  Try a different juice; we all prefer some vegetables more than others, and even find that some vegetables we love, we do not love in our juice.  For me it is beets and cabbage; love to eat them, do not care for them in juice.  Or maybe try a juice bar….there one can find some amazing combinations that are just as delicious as healthy.

Think buying juice is expensive or decadent? I used to think so too…but shell out several hundred dollars for the juicer, tons for the organic produce, and spend copious amounts of time prepping, juicing and cleaning up, and you have yourself a bargain.  I still make my own occasionally, but mostly, I go to Iggy’s.  Iggy’s is a juice bar run by Ignacio Carrera, located within Vitahealth, a small apothecary where I get all my prescriptions, supplements, and a tremendous amount of advice.  And speaking of Iggy’s, you won’t find conventional produce there like you will in the trendy fad joints.  If your juice bar claims that they use organic and local produce, you can be sure that they are using conventional most of the time, at your expense.  Make sure they use 100% organic produce. Do your research, ask questions.

To Juice or not to Juice, that is the question

What I don’t suggest, is going on a fad diet where you only drink juice…especially if you are like me—no food, no mojo (and very cranky) and the toxic blood sugar rushes are not good for anyone. So drink your juice, between meals or with meals, or at least add some protein powder if your juice is to be your meal.  Juice cleanse for a day, okay, but not as a diet.  And remember, limit your fruit juicing as it creates a concentrated source of sugar (carrot juice will do the same).  I am not one to say no fresh orange or pineapple juice, just be sure to have it with a meal that contains fat, protein and/or fiber, all of which will slow the reaction. And, you shouldn’t count on juicing as your sole source of fruits and vegetables as you do lose the fiber as well as the skin, which is full of essential nutrients.   (Remember, if you want to regain some of the lost fiber, you can add it to your muffin batter or stir it into your soup.)

Also, the jury is still out on juicing raw crucifers.  Some feel that they contribute to thyroid problems, others disagree.  However, a daily juice should not pose any issues, and if you vary your juices, all the better.

Still not sold?  You can pack some serious servings in smoothies. I like to make one with an large handful of broccoli sprouts, one avocado, some superfood powers and some water or almond milk; you can also do this with baby spinach or other greens, but I find the sprouts mix in really well and do not make the smoothie bitter.  Experiment with your own;  Iggy makes a fantastic one he calls the Incredible Hulk…pretty funny, but it’s made with juiced cucumber and celery as a base, with kale, spinach and chard, a banana and some protein power mixed in.

So, if you happen to live or traffic on the UES of Manhattan, stop in and say hello to Iggy; order Iggy’s Greens or a Hulk.  Oh, and don’t forget to ask Iggy to do a magic trick for you….the kids really look forward to it!  And you may even find that juicing encourages you and your kids to eat more fruits and veges.  Also, check out Iggy in Diary of a Social Gal.  That’s Iggy, upper right corner, but scroll down, and you will see One Lucky Duck…scroll down once more and you will see Iggy in his juice bar, at the Vitahealth Apothecary.

Beyond Treatment for Cancer: Taking an Active Role in Survival

On Survive and Live Well, we talk about surviving, thriving and living well.  Part of that comes from the successful treatment of cancer; part of that involves never having the cancer return.  Over the next eight weeks, we will hear from a variety of health experts….people who strongly believe that we can and should be active participants in our health; that diet, exercise and passion are all part of healing and thriving.  Cancer treatment can include conventional alone, conventional mixed with commentary therapies, or through the use of more natural means.

Yesterday I spoke about eating real food.  Food; is it Good for Our Health or Our Cancer?  I’d like to stress again the importance of staying close to nature.  When you reach for a cheese substitute, take a look at the ingredients…do you recognize all or even most of them?  Did your great grandmother eat them?  If not, put it back; same for eggs, milk and other real foods.  Try to avoid packaged food.  Like quinoa? Sure, if often comes in a package; read the label. If it says quinoa, buy it. If it says quinoa and nine other ingredients, think again and be sure you know what they are.  Make better choices.  Take for example, almond milk.  The boxed versions come with carrageenan, but the refrigerated cartons do not.  The boxed versions also lack healthful enzymes.  So while not every choice is the perfect choice for health, we can make better choices.

Eat passionately—eat real food for real health.  As you develop a passion for real food, you will notice you feel better and have more energy. Good food gives you energy. Eating well improves your mood. You will become someone who eats well because you love good food, not because your doctor or coach tells you to do it.

Same Guys, Different Room: Why we don’t have a Breast Cancer Vaccine

We could, you see, have a preventive breast cancer vaccine sooner, not later. I remember in my conversations with Dr Devra Davis, we talked about the ridiculously long delay for the declaration that smoking causes cancer; yup, the money was in the tobacco, and many of the honchos in the ACS were smokers.  So, it would seem to me that now the money is in big Pharma, and the FDA just doesn’t have the baba....guts (keeping it clean) to stand up to them or to turn down the money.  I read that in August 2011, the FDA gave Dr Keith Knutson the approval to proceed to the trial phase for two new cancer vaccines that fight cancer; the goal—to prevent recurrence.  While this is huge, what struck me is that maybe the FDA and Big Pharma thought this was okay because the caveat is that you won’t qualify for the vaccine unless you’ve already agreed to take their toxic and very expensive chemo.  So what if women don’t want to be diagnosed with breast cancer; have they considered this?  Have they considered that many don’t want to be told they have to accept chemo? Apparently not.  However, it moves; we will see this vaccine—if we live long enough.  Thank you, Dr Kathleen Ruddy for an informative and humorous post.  I have no doubt that this vaccine will become a reality; my hope is that it is sooner than later. http://breastcancerbydrruddy.com/?p=4183#more-4183

Lung Cancer News on W4CS.com

After losing her Mother to lung cancer in 2011, Joni Aldrich supports the cause to change the shocking lack of support for lung cancer causes. Joni is proud to say that her own poster is now part of the campaign. Why is that important? For every $15 spent on breast cancer, only $1 is spent on Lung Cancer in the U.S. The overall survival rate for Lung Cancer is still 15.5%. This hasn't changed in over 40 years ago. Anyone can get lung cancer. Joni interviewed Gabby Wilson on her show. She's a lung cancer survivor at 11-years-old. If you missed the interview with Gabby Wilson, it will be rebroadcast on www.W4CS.com, so stay tuned for details.

On Monday, July 30th, on
CANCER S.O.S., Joni’s interview was about 24-year-old Kelcey Harrison, who is running 3,500 miles across America to raise funds for lung cancer. She's running from New York City to San Francisco in memory of 22-year-old student and athlete at U.C. Berkeley, Jill Costello, who lost her battle with Lung Cancer in 2010 one year after diagnosis. To learn more go to: http://jillslegacy.org/.  Please visit: The Bonnie J. Addario Lung Cancer Foundation (www.lungcancerfoundation.org). If you missed the show, it will be rebroadcast on Saturday, August 4th on www.W4WN.com and www.W4CS.com.

Lung cancer claims more lives each year than breast, colon, liver, kidney, and melanoma cancers combined, due in part to a lack of early detection. Often symptoms don't appear until later stages of the disease when 5-year survival can be as low as 4%.   Sadly, about 85% of lung cancers are diagnosed in late stage.  While much progress has been made in the treatment of lung cancer, the best outcome may be achieved when tumors are discovered while still small. For more information, please visit: http://www.lungcancerfoundation.org/early-detection/, and view my interview with Greg Stanley, of Oncimmune, on Survive and Live Well, to learn more about early testing for lung cancer: http://hipcast.com/podcast/HBFWRWHQ.

Healing Cancer Naturally, Dental Toxins and More!

Choosing the best path for treatment is a very individual process.  Many people choose conventional treatment for their cancer, and many do not.  It’s all about finding and choosing the right treatment for you, for your body and your cancer.  Knowing your options is key, but equally as important is knowing the pros and cons of each treatment.  While there are no guarantees, we need to know –what are the chances the protocol will treat the cancer? And will it come with temporary or life threatening side effects?  I don’t like that word, side effect.  If treatment can cause serious damage, I am not so sure the damage can be referred to as a side effect.  But anyway, can these so called side effects be avoided? What are the chances for recurrence?  Will the treatment encourage or discourage the return of the cancer or new cancer? The recent news about Robin Roberts only brings awareness to the subject; sadly, she is hardly alone in her plight. Last week we spoke about a potential vaccine for cancer, but until we have that, we still have to treat our cancer. So today on the show, my guest, Bill Henderson, talked about healing cancer naturally, by means of a gentle, non-toxic therapy with no side effects (other than improved health and less cancer.)

Cancer is not a symptom, a random tumor that must simply be removed.  It is an imbalance in the body, a cry for help, if you will, that we need to take care of ourselves; that our body and soul require attention.  If we do not fix the imbalance or the reason for the cancer, the cancer will likely recur and/or spread, and certainly will not go away.

I loved Bill’s answer to “If your wife was diagnosed with breast cancer, what would you recommend she do?” First, he would send her to the dentist. Routine dental work, such as root canals, tooth extractions (especially the removal of wisdom teeth), etc. can cause massive infections in the mouth that spread throughout the lymph system and contribute to cancer, especially breast cancer. To learn more about dental concerns and cancer, please view: http://www.cancertutor.com/Other/Breast_Cancer.html.  He also spoke at length about choosing the right dentist, one who is trained in the safe correction of dental culprits. “In the U.S., there are 160,000 dentists in the American Dental Association and another 7,400 dentist who are oral surgeons.  Of those, there are less than 50 I would trust.”  For a list of dentists that Bill recommends, please email me.

Second, he would address her stress issues, as often times repressed stress can lead to and fuel cancer. This stress-reaction can stem from an event that took place years prior to our diagnosis. He strongly recommends that we read Dr Brad Nelson’s The Emotional Code, to uncover and resolve stress issues or events that are causing our cancer, and preventing us from healing.
Lastly, he would change her diet, although he avoids that word “diet” as it implies something temporary. Eating well is a lifelong commitment, not something we do for just a few weeks.

All of these actions are important in our quest for wellness.

What he stressed was the importance of addressing the cause of the cancer as a means to cure it. What he didn’t do was suggest that his wife head off to a cancer clinic.  For some people, some cancers, this may be the way to go.  However, no matter what treatment we choose, if we don’t change the environment in which our cancer was permitted to grow, it will be very difficult to cure it. Bill’s argument for treating cancer naturally is a compelling one.  To learn more about it, please visit Bill’s website or read his book, Cancer-Free.

The best thing we can do is to consider the origin of our cancer, address it, and choose the best possible treatment for our cancer, our body, our needs.

To read more on changing the cancer environment, please visit: http://elynjacobs.wordpress.com/2011/12/09/changing-the-cancer-environment/.

Please join me next week on Survive and Live Well as I talk with my guests about two important topics: mesothelioma and early detection of lung cancer.

Have a happy 4th and see you next week!
